An international group of researchers concluded that the primary factor behind the extraordinarily arid environment is not just decreased rainfall but the extreme heat. Following a historic heatwave in June, rivers are now parched, water restrictions are strict, and wildfires have caused widespread destruction. The recent study reveals that the hotter climate of today accelerates the loss of moisture from soils, lakes, and rivers, significantly boosting the likelihood of extremely dry conditions. Mariam Zachariah of Imperial College London pointed out that the drought is not mainly due to low rainfall but results from a warmer atmosphere causing greater moisture deficits on land. This dynamic means that even in areas where rainfall remains relatively stable, the risk of drought continues to grow. Scientists explain that for every 1 degree Celsius increase in temperature, the atmosphere can hold about seven percent more water vapor. This increased capacity causes more water to evaporate from soils and vegetation across the landscape.

By analyzing extensive weather data and using advanced computer models, researchers compared current conditions against a hypothetical climate that was 1.4 degrees Celsius cooler. They determined that soils in western Europe are now five times more likely to be extremely dry than in a world without human-induced warming. In eastern Europe, these moisture deficits are 11 times more probable. The study also found that the occurrence of extremely high evaporative demand between April and June in western Europe is about 80 times more likely now. This indicates that rainfall shortages which previously would not have caused severe drought are now leading to much drier soils.

Dominik Schumacher, a researcher at ETH Zurich, emphasized that the trend of unusual soil drying is already evident in spring, well before summer begins. He explained that as temperatures rise, the atmosphere’s thirst increases rapidly, drawing critical moisture from rivers, lakes, reservoirs, and the soil. The combination of a relatively wet start to the year and extreme heat created optimal conditions for large wildfires. The rapid drying process made the land more susceptible to ignition, which contributed to severe fires across multiple countries. The study confirms that climate change is shifting traditional weather patterns into increasingly dangerous cycles, intensifying drought across Europe.

Widespread soil moisture loss is now placing unprecedented stress on agriculture, with significant economic repercussions. The drought is causing severe disruptions in farming, resulting in historic crop failures across several nations. France is forecasted to see its lowest maize harvest in 50 years, highlighting a major impact on regional food supply. Meanwhile, Romania has lost over one million hectares of maize, further jeopardizing the agricultural supply chain. These domestic shortages, combined with ongoing global conflicts, risk driving up food prices and disproportionately affecting low-income households.

Water shortages are also affecting transportation and energy production. Very low river levels are disrupting vital cargo routes, reflecting the growing severity of the continent’s water scarcity crisis. Reduced flow in key rivers threatens hydroelectric power generation in areas heavily reliant on it. According to data from the Copernicus Climate Change Service, the recent June was the hottest on record in western Europe. As a result, many countries have already implemented emergency restrictions or bans on non-essential drinking water use to conserve dwindling supplies.

The scientific community warns that if global temperatures continue to rise, drought conditions like these could become even more common. Experts stress that these high evaporative conditions are already occurring at 1.4 degrees Celsius of warming, underscoring the immediate risks posed by current emission levels. Should global temperatures reach 2.8 degrees Celsius, as projected, the likelihood of such evaporative conditions could double. Without swift and decisive reductions in emissions, experts caution that Europe faces a future dominated by persistently scorching and arid summers.
