DR Congo Ebola outbreak passes 1,900 deaths
Health teams track Ebola infections across affected communities in eastern DR Congo.

Ituri remains the province most severely affected, with 3,636 confirmed infections and 1,551 fatalities. North Kivu follows with 470 cases and 315 deaths. Haut Uele has documented 91 cases and 44 deaths, while Tshopo has seen nine cases and five fatalities. South Kivu’s report includes three cases and one death. Overall, the outbreak has spread to 53 out of 140 health zones within the five provinces reporting confirmed cases.

The latest daily update recorded 89 new confirmed infections and 21 additional deaths nationwide. Of these, 73 new cases emerged in Ituri. North Kivu added 12 new cases, and Haut Uele saw four. Public health teams are actively monitoring 83.4% of contacts identified across the affected zones. The authorities continue to reconcile surveillance data with laboratory and clinical records as they update case and death counts.

Ituri remains the epicenter of the expanding outbreak

The Democratic Republic of the Congo declared the Ebola outbreak in May, after laboratory tests confirmed the presence of Bundibugyo virus. The Ministry of Health coordinates efforts including surveillance, testing, patient isolation, contact tracing, and clinical management in affected areas. Infection prevention protocols and safe burial practices are also enforced to curb further spread. The outbreak has extended to several eastern provinces, where insecurity, high population mobility, and overwhelmed health systems pose additional challenges to containment efforts.

Ebola typically causes symptoms such as fever, severe weakness, body pain, vomiting, and other serious health issues. As the disease advances, bleeding can also occur. This outbreak is the 17th recorded Ebola incident in the country since scientists first identified the virus in 1976. The World Health Organization has provided support for case detection, laboratory testing, patient treatment, and infection control measures as teams continue to trace transmission across multiple provinces.

Bundibugyo Virus Lacks Approved Vaccines

Bundibugyo virus is different from the Zaire Ebola strain targeted by licensed vaccines. Currently, there are no approved vaccines or specific treatments for Bundibugyo virus disease. Medical teams depend on supportive care such as hydration, symptom management, and close patient monitoring. Research initiatives continue to evaluate potential vaccines and investigational therapies. By late July, Uganda had reported 20 confirmed Bundibugyo cases and two deaths, with no new cases after June 21.

This outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo represents the largest epidemic caused by Bundibugyo virus and ranks as the second-largest Ebola outbreak on record by confirmed case count. The majority of infections and fatalities are concentrated in Ituri and North Kivu. Health authorities persist with laboratory testing, contact monitoring, patient isolation, and treatment while continually updating national statistics as new surveillance data come in.
